What Makes the Wind Blow?
The sun’s rays heat the Earth’s surface unevenly. Land heats up faster than water, and the equator gets more direct sunlight than the poles. This creates temperature and pressure differences in the atmosphere. As warm, lighter air rises, cooler, denser air rushes in to take its place. This movement of air is what we call wind.
So, as long as the sun shines and the Earth turns, the wind will blow. It’s a vast, constantly replenishing resource, waiting to be harnessed.

How a Wind Turbine Works
A modern wind turbine is a masterpiece of aerodynamic and electrical engineering, but the principle behind it is wonderfully straightforward. Think of it as the opposite of a household fan. A fan uses electricity to make wind; a wind turbine uses wind to make electricity.
1. Capturing the Wind:
The most iconic parts of a turbine are its long, sleek blades. These are not just simple paddles; they are shaped like an airplane’s wings. When wind flows over the curved surface of a blade, it creates a difference in air pressure. This pressure difference generates “lift,” a force that pushes the blade and causes the entire rotor (the blades and the central hub) to spin.
2. Gaining Speed:
The slow, powerful rotation of the blades (around 15-20 revolutions per minute) isn’t fast enough to generate electricity efficiently. The rotor is connected to a shaft that leads into the *nacelle*—the housing at the top of the tower. Inside the nacelle, a gearbox acts like the gears on a bicycle, converting the slow, high-torque rotation into a much faster spin—over 1,500 revolutions per minute.
3. Generating Electricity:
This high-speed shaft turns a generator. Inside the generator, powerful magnets spin past coils of copper wire. This movement excites the electrons in the wire, creating an electrical current. This is the fundamental principle of electricity generation discovered by Michael Faraday nearly 200 years ago.
